B.Tech Admissions at IIST



 Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, a Deemed to be University, located at Valiamala P.O., Thiruvananthapuram, has invited applications for admission to the B.Tech Programmes in (i) Aerospace Engineering (ii) Avionics and (iii) Physical Sciences, at the Institute for 2013-14.
There are a total of 156 seats of which, 60 each are for B.Tech in Aerospace Engineering and B.Tech in Avionics. There are 36 seats for B.Tech in Physical Sciences. More details on the three Programmes are given in the Prospectus.
Only Indian citizens are eligible to apply for admission to IIST. Those belonging to General category (GEN) and Other Backward Classes (OBC) categories must have been born on or after October 1, 1988. Applicants belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Persons with Disabilities (PD) categories born on or after October 1, 1983 are also eligible.
Applicant should have passed their Qualifying Examination with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as subjects of the curriculum. Those belonging to GEN and OBC categories must have secured an aggregate of at least 70% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) in the qualifying examination and those belonging to SC/ST/PD should have an aggregate of at least 60% marks in PCM subjects in the qualifying examination.
The qualifying examinations include (i) The final examination of the 10+2 system, conducted by any recognized Central/State Board, such as Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi; Council for Indian School Certificate Examination (ISCE), New Delhi, etc (ii) Intermediate or two-year Pre-University examination conducted by a recognized Board/University (iii) Final examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy(iv) Vocational Higher Secondary Examination (v) Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling with a minimum of five subjects (vi) Any Public School/Board/University examination in India or in any foreign country recognized as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) (vii) General Certificate Education (GCE) examination (London / Cambridge /Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level (viii) High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva.
In case the relevant qualifying examination is not a public examination, the candidate must have passed at least one public (Board or Pre-University) examination at an earlier level. Applicant should have appeared for the Joint Entrance Examination (Main)-2013 conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi and should have qualified to appear for Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced)-2013 conducted by IITs. They should also secure the minimum prescribed category-wise marks in JEE (Advanced)-2013 as specified for their category, to qualify for admission to IIST.
General Candidates (GEN) should secure at least 20 pc marks in aggregate and at least 5 pc marks in each of the three subjects, Physics Chemistry and Mathematics. Other Backward Community-Non Creamy Layer OBC (NCL) Candidates should secure at least 18 pc marks in aggregate and at least 4.5 pc marks in each of Physics Chemistry and Mathematics.SC, ST & PD Candidates should secure at least 10 pc marks in aggregate and at least 2.5 pc marks in each of Physics Chemistry and Mathematics. The marks secured by the candidate in JEE (Advanced)-2013 examination will be used only for deciding his/her eligibility for admission to IIST and not for preparing IIST Admission Rank List.
Rank list will be based on the position of the applicants who have registered online for the admission to IIST, in the All-India Rank list (including category rank) prepared and published by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), by giving 60% weightage to the score in JEE (Main) examination and 40% weightage to the normalised score in Class 12 qualifying examination.
Seats will be reserved for SC (15%), ST (7.5%), OBC NCL (27%) and Persons with Disabilities (3% - Horizontal Reservation), as per rules and subject to production of necessary documents specified.
Applications can be submitted online, at http://admission2013.iist.ac.in/till 11.30 pm (IST) on 10th July 2013. For online registration of the application, applicants should have access to a computer, a laser printer and Internet connection. They should also have their JEE (Main)-2013 Rol lNumber, JEE (Advanced)-2013 Roll Number and a valid email id. Applicant should read and follow the instruction given in the portal and fill all the details in the online application form. After submitting the information asked in Step 1 and 2, applicant has to download/Print the Challan to remit the registration fee. The fee for male candidates in GEN and OBC categories is Rs. 600/-, that for female candidates in GEN and OBC categories is Rs. 300/-. The fee for all SC, ST, PD candidates will be Rs.300/-.
The payment is to be made in any one of the branches of State Bank of India (SBI) or Union Bank of India (UBI), using the Challan that has been downloaded / printed from the website on successful completion of Online Registration. The last date for remitting the Registration fee is 12th
July, 2013. Applicants residing abroad can remit the Registration fee through Demand Draft (DD) issued by any bank outside India. The Demand Draft for the amount applicable should be drawn in favour of ‘The Registrar, IIST’, payable at Thiruvananthapuram, India. Applicant should write the Name and Registration Number on the back side of the Demand Draft (DD) and the same should be sent to ‘TheChairman, B.Tech Admissions-2013, Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Valiamala (P.O), Thiruvananthapuram-695547, Kerala, India’. This is a special facility extended to Indian nationals residing abroad alone. Any Demand Draft issued from a bank within India will not be accepted.
After remittance of the fees, applicant has to enter the Bank Transaction Details by logging into the online application portal using Registration Number and Password. Applicant should also upload the scanned image in PDF/JPEG format of the Institute copy of Challan countersigned by Bank. Alternatively, the applicant may send the Institute Copy of Challan countersigned by the designated Bank through Speed Post, to ‘Chairman, B.Tech Admissions-2013, Indian Institute of SpaceScience and Technology, Valiamala (P.O.), Thiruvananthapuram- 695547,Kerala, India’. The Last date for receiving the Institute Copy of the Challan (in original) at IIST is15th July, 2013.
NRI Candidates have to write their Name & Registration Number on the back side of the Demand Draft and send the Demand Draft along with Institute Copy of ‘NRI Payment form’, by Post to ‘Chairman, B.Tech Admissions-2013, Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Valiamala (P.O.), Thiruvananthapuram- 695547, Kerala, India’. The last date for receiving the Demand Draft at IIST is 15th July, 2013.
Those who have applied online for B.Tech Admission to IIST and secured a Registration number will only be considered for admission to IIST. Candidates duly registered will be ranked by IIST for all categories as indicated. The IIST admission rank list and the date/venues for counselling will be published at the website on19th July 2013.
IIST provides Financial Assistance Package funded by Department of Space (DOS), Government of India for students admitted to B.Tech programme, once in a semester, to meet the expenses of education including Tuition Fee, Students Amenity Fee, Hostel charges including dining, Establishment charges and Medical cover. An additional Book Allowance of Rs.3000/- is also provided to each student for every semester. In the event a student, while studying in IIST, fails to secure a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 7.5 out of a 10 point scale, in any semester, the student is liable to pay all the expenses except Tuition fee and Student Amenity fee. In the succeeding semester if he/she earns GPA greater than 7.5 out of 10, then he/she is exempted from the payment of charges as stipulated above in the following semester.
As performance based financial assistance is provided by DOS to the B.Tech students of IIST, ISRO/DOS will have the first right to absorb them, subject to the human resource requirements of ISRO/DOS. The job absorption will be as per the recruitment norms of ISRO/DOS Centres for IIST graduates. To be eligible for absorption in ISRO/DOS, the student should have completed the B.Tech. Programme in four years with a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 7.5 out of 10. Details are given in the Prospectus.
A student who joins IIST to pursue B.Tech Programme is required to execute a Surety bond for an amount of Rs. 10 Lakhs, in the prescribed format (on an Rs.100/- Non-Judicial paper) duly signed by the student, parent/ and surety at the time of admission at the Institute. The student is mandated to serve as Scientist/Engineer in the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) /Department of Space for a minimum period of 3 years.
